Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian band formed in 1993 in Oslo, which played a key role in popularizing symphonic black metal around the world. The band's first albums brought them recognition on the extreme metal scene, but the real breakthrough came in the late 1990s when the band signed with Nuclear Blast and released the album Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, considered the band's entry into the international arena. Subsequent releases developed the band's distinctive sound, combining the aggression of black metal with melody and elaborate keyboard arrangements, which set the group apart from other representatives of the genre. The groundbreaking album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia introduced the extensive use of a symphony orchestra and won the prestigious Norwegian music award Spellemannprisen, cementing the band's position as one of the leaders of the metal scene.
In the following years, Dimmu Borgir achieved significant commercial and concert success, performing at the world's largest metal festivals, such as Wacken Open Air and Ozzfest. The album Death Cult Armageddon was a commercial success and reached high positions on the European charts, while the subsequent In Sorte Diaboli became the best-selling release in the band's history, achieving gold record status in Norway. The band also became famous for their spectacular concerts featuring an orchestra and choir, culminating in the live album Forces of the Northern Night. Thanks to the combination of extreme music with symphonic elements and spectacular stage design, the group has been recognized as one of the most influential and popular bands in the history of black metal.
